Dana Nielsen

Biography


Los Angeles based, Grammy-nominated mixer, engineer, producer and saxophonist Dana Nielsen has amassed credits that run the stylistic gamut from The Avett Brother's to Santana and just about every style in between. Nielsen’s work can be heard on albums by a diverse roster of artists such as Damien Rice, The Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Weezer, Adele, and Rihanna. He  worked as an engineer on Kanye West's Yeezus (Roc-A-Fella), mixed Ruen Brothers's Point Dume (Republic), and engineered and mixed The Avett Brother's latest record True Sadness (Republic), Grammy nominated in 2017 for Best Americana Album.

Nielsen also frequently works with music for picture, producing, recording, and mixing a growing number of film scores and soundtracks, such as Will Ferrell’s Anchorman 2 (Paramount) and Casa De Mi Padre (NALA), as well as the Sam Rockwell/Olivia Wilde dark comedy Better Living Through Chemistry. As a composer, saxophonist, singer and programmer, Nielsen’s own music can be heard on TV commercials and hit shows like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and America’s Next Top Model.

Throughout his career, legendary producer Rick Rubin has frequently tapped Nielsen’s skills for various projects including Justin Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveSounds, and Red Hot Chili Peppers' Stadium Arcadium , and Madison Ward's debut single "Mirror" (American). In 2017 Nielsen mixed and engineered The Avett Brothers latest release True Sadness (Republic). The lead single "Ain't No Man" was the band's first #1 song, reaching the top position on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, and the album reached #1 on the Billboard Albums Chart, Digital Albums Chart and Rock Albums Chart.

More recent projects include, engineering William Patrick Corgan's (best known as Billy Corgan from The Smashing Pumpkins) latest solo release Ogilala (BMG) and Damien Rice’s latest Rick-Rubin-produced album, My Favourite Faded Fantasy. Nielsen also produced, recorded, and mixed forthcoming album All Rise (Fasho) for emerging Venice Beach hip hop band Crown and the M.O.B. (Message of the Blues). Nielsen co-wrote much of the album, and also plays sax and Moog bass as part of the M.O.B.

This past year, Nielsen worked with Rubin, engineering sessions for Shawn Mendes, Keith Urban, Neil Young and Reignwolf, as well as jazz guitarist and songwriter, Nir Felder. Nielsen mixed and engineered the latest single by American rap artist DRAM "Check Ya Fabrics" and also worked closely with  rising artist Madison Ward, mixing her debut single "Mirror" (American). Currently, Nielsen is mixing The Smashing Pumpkins forthcoming album  scheduled for release later this year, including their  latest single “Solara”.
