Los Angeles based, Grammy-nominated mixer, engineer, producer and saxophonist Dana Nielsen has amassed credits that run the stylistic gamut from Neil Diamond to Slayer and just about every style in between. Nielsen’s work can be heard on albums by a diverse roster of artists such as System of a Down, Bob Dylan, Linkin Park, Weezer, Adele, and Rihanna. He worked as an engineer on Kanye West's Yeezus (Roc-A-Fella), mixed Noah Gundersen's Ledges (DualTone), engineered Jake Bugg's Shangri La (Virgin/Mercury) and engineered and mixed The Avett Brothers' "True Sadness" (Republic) which received a 2017 GRAMMY nomination for Best Americana Album.
Nielsen also frequently works with music for picture, producing, recording, and mixing a growing number of film scores and soundtracks, such as Will Ferrell’s Anchorman 2 (Paramount) and Casa De Mi Padre (NALA), as well as the Sam Rockwell/Olivia Wilde dark comedy Better Living Through Chemistry. As a composer, saxophonist, singer and programmer, Nielsen’s own music can be heard on TV commercials and hit shows like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and America’s Next Top Model.
Throughout his career, legendary producer Rick Rubin has frequently tapped Nielsen’s skills for various projects including Justin Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveSounds, and Red Hot Chili Peppers' Stadium Arcadium. In 2008 he mixed Neil Diamond’s #1 selling album, Home Before Dark, and in 2013 Nielsen worked as an engineer on Black Sabbath’s Rick Rubin-produced 13, the band’s first album to top the UK charts in 43 years.
More recent projects include, mixing Ruen Brothers' Point Dume (Republic) and Damien Rice’s latest Rick-Rubin-produced album, My Favourite Faded Fantasy. Nielsen also produced, recorded, and mixed forthcoming album All Rise (Fasho) for emerging Venice Beach hip hop band Crown and the M.O.B. (Message of the Blues). Nielsen co-wrote much of the album, and also plays sax and Moog bass as part of the M.O.B.
This past year, Nielsen worked with Rubin, engineering sessions for Justin Bieber, Keith Urban, Neil Young and Reignwolf, as well as mixed select tracks from Dweezil Zappa's latest album Via Zammata. Nielsen mixed and engineered The Avett Brothers latest release "True Sadness" (Republic). The lead single "Ain't No Man" was the band's first #1 song, reaching the top position on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, and the album reached #1 on the Billboard Albums Chart, Digital Albums Chart and Rock Albums Chart. In 2017, True Sadness received a GRAMMY Award nomination for Best Americana Album.
