Kevin Augunas is a two-time Grammy Award winning producer, engineer, mixer and songwriter who has worked with the Lumineers, the Black Keys, Lostprophets, Needtobreathe, Cold War Kids, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and Valerie June to name a few.
Augunas started out as a session bass player in the 90s, and became a go-to recording engineer for local NYC bands who wanted to record demos. He began collecting vintage gear and began a recording studio in LA. In early 2011, Augunas took over the legendary Sound City premises in Los Angeles and renamed it Fairfax Recording. The first project he undertook in his new studio was the mixing and additional recording of the Lumineers’ debut self-titled album, released via Dualtone Records. The album went on to reach the top 10 in the USA, UK, Australia, Ireland and Netherlands; and the single “Ho Hey” went multi-platinum worldwide.
Since then, Augunas has used the studio to record, mix and produce the majority of acts that are signed to his Fairfax record label, a joint venture label with Hollywood Records. He is also responsible for signing Gotye just before “Somebody That I Used To Know” went on to become a #1 hit song. Artists previously signed to Fairfax Recordings include Florence + The Machine, Edward Sharpe, The Strypes and Tribes. Active artists include Ethan Burns, Dreamers, James Supercave and The Young Wild.
While Kevin continues his work as an independent producer, engineer and mixer, for selected projects, he will strategically partner with famed producer, engineer, mixer Henry Hirsh (Lenny Kravitz, Michael Jackson, Madonna). Hirsch will move his famed collection of recording equipment to Augunas’ Fairfax Recording studios, encompassing some of the most coveted vintage outboard gear, instruments, and microphones in the world, including his fully discrete 26-input Helios console restored by Dave Amels. When paired together, they aim to provide an uncompromising and unparalleled analog recording experience.
