Quarto Negro Talks Portland, Helio Sequence-Produced Album

Brazilian band Quarto Negro was featured in The Portland Mercury, discussing an outsider’s experience inside the Portland music scene. Their forthcoming record was produced by clients The Helio Sequence in Portland, and features fellow Portland musicians Justin Harris of Menomena and Kathy Foster of the Thermals. The unusual pairing of Brazilians and Portland’s indie scene resulted in a record described as “psychedelic rock in Portuguese, and it’s goddamn good.”

The recording process was documented by filmmakers Daniel Barosa and Nikolas Maciel for a forthcoming documentary “GRU-PDX”. Initially focused around the band, the documentary quickly expanded its scope to examine the Portland scene as a whole and as experienced through the eyes of a foreign band. In addition to the band and Helio Sequence, the documentary will feature interviews with Portugal. The Man, the Dandy Warhols, and a number of others. The album and documentary are both due out this year.
