As an executive, Matt led Blue Note’s marketing and A&R departments before being called on by industry legend Mo Ostin to run Jazz A&R for Warner Bros. Records. He signed and in most cases produced a roster of heavyweights, eventually being elevated to Executive VP/GM for the label while making Warner an industry leader, garnering over 40 Grammy Nominations and countless #1 singles and albums.
In 2003, Pierson left Warner Bros. to produce and consult independently. He continues to work with established artists while also focusing on developing and nurturing new talent in the jazz and singer-songwriter worlds. His recent production work includes acclaimed songwriter and fellow GPS client James Maddock’s (Casa Del Fuego/Julian Records), the forthcoming album for Aaron & the Spell, the modern jazz vocalist Monika Borzym (Sony) and albums with master drummer Eric Harland, soul diva Shayna Steele and Orange is the New Black star Lea Delaria. Recently, Pierson produced albums for Bria Skonberg, Ariel Pocock, and Matt Baker, as well as Robert Randolph & The Family Band’s Got Soul (Sony Masterworks). He was nominated in the 2018 Grammy Awards for ‘Best Contemporary Blues Album’ (Robert Randolph), and is currently nominated in the 2018 Juno Awards for ‘Best Vocal Jazz Album’ (Bria Skonberg).
